Hospital de Kalukembe represents one of CHSC’s greatest staffing needs. It has an inpatient capacity of around 200 beds. It is located at Huila, Caluquemge, Angola, some 230 kilometers or 140 miles northwest of the city of Lubango, The inpatient wards include: Pediatrics, maternity, men’s, women’s and the ICU. Kalukembe is the only protestant mission hospital to survive the 27 year civil war in Angola. Dr. Daniel and Dr. Priscilla Cummings are CHSC staff working at this facility and they are in need of medical and support staff. They are the only physicians for this 200 bed facility. Daniel is a board certified ER physician and Priscilla is an OB/GYN with specialized training in Vesicovaginal Fistula surgery.

Our staff often serve as faculty in established training programs and residencies raising up the next generation of health professionals. Others train national staff in less formal environments. Building local capacity is central to the identity of the Christian Health Service Corps, therefore we actively seek out places where we can have a lasting impact by discipling, and training local Christian physicians, nurses and health professionals to serve in their own communities.

Language: The national language is Portuguese and language skills or training are needed before serving long-term at this site. Kalukembes are a subgroup of the Ovimbundu people of Angola so Bantu is a common tribal language but almost everyone speaks Portuguese.
