Guinebor 2 Hospital, on the edge of the Chadian capital N’Djamena, has been providing healthcare services and ministering to surrounding communities since 2011. Currently a 70-bed hospital with a reputation for good quality and affordable surgery, it is continually growing and seeking to develop the range and quality of services it offers. Guinebor 2 Hospital (G2) serves a multi-ethnic local population of 172,000 and also receives patients from multiple people groups across Chad, from closely neighboring Cameroon, and sometimes even from Sudan and the Central African Republic (CAR).
In a typical month, G2 Hospital will serve 1000 Outpatients and 200 Inpatients, including delivering 140 babies, completing 60 -120 surgeries, 4500 Lab tests, 380 Physiotherapy appointments, and 450 Ultra-Sounds. A wide spectrum of surgeries can be performed at G2 Hospital, with the most common being hernias, cysts, and orthopedic surgery. Chad remains one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world, and so malnutrition, malaria, and maternal/infant mortality are commonplace within the communities we serve. For the team at G2 Hospital it is a privilege to provide good quality and affordable health care in Christ’s name for those who need it most.
Guinebor 2 Hospital was founded by American Missionaries, Dr Bert Oubre, a Surgeon, and his wife Debbie, a Nurse; who had previously established a successful mission hospital in Cameroon (Hôpital de Meskine). From the outset it has received extensive support from the UK-based BMS World Mission (formerly the Baptist Mission Society), and G2 also enjoys partnerships with other international mission and medical agencies, and a Protocol D’accord with the Chadian Government. The staff team of 90 Chadian workers is complemented by international mission workers from up to 9 different countries, many of them on long-term placements and with diverse skill-sets; including Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Anaesthesiology, Paediatrics, Nutrition and Public Health, Chaplaincy, Music-Therapy, Administration and Construction/Maintenance. These international workers place a strong emphasis on the training and capacity-building of local staff, and hospital management is conducted through a multi-national Senior-Management team with Chadian nationals as Department Heads. Secure and comfortable housing for international workers and on-call Doctors exists in an attractive and well-shaded residential compound within the hospital premises.
The formal language of the hospital is French, although many senior staff also speak English. Communication with patients is predominantly conducted in French and Chadian Arabic.
Opportunities exist for a wide range of specialists to undertake short or long-term placements with G2 Hospital, but the most urgent need is for another Surgeon. An Obstetrician/Gynecologist would also be a very welcome addition to the G2 Hospital team.
The hospital operates increasingly as a social enterprise, covering most of its running costs from hospital income. However, external investment is required for new buildings and medical equipment, notably for sterilization, anesthesia, oxygen-supply, physical-therapy and ultra-sound. Previous grant donors have included the Swiss Government and Guernsey Overseas Aid Commission.
