Assemblies of God Hospital, Saboba (formerly Saboba Medical Center) has an inpatient capacity of around 100 beds. Our regional capital of Tamale is fairly centrally located and we are 110 miles from Tamale or about 3 hours’ drive. Saboba, the Capital of the Saboba-Cheriponi district of the Northern Region, is a rural sub-Sahelian village, on the Ghana-Togo border.  The inpatient wards include: pediatric, women, maternity, men wards, and an operating theatre where major and minor operations are performed.

There is an active Eye Unit with regular outreaches by a highly skilled ophthalmologist, as well as have a very active Mental Health Unit with 3 Mental Health nurses. Additionally, a Nutrition Unit is under development. One of the staff just completed training as a nutritionist at the College of Health and Well-Being in Kintampo.  Short-term volunteers are reviewed and accepted on a case by case basis depending on facility needs and skill sets of the volunteer.

  • RN’s multiple specialties ideally a RN Clinical Educator

Our staff often serve as faculty in established training programs and residencies raising up the next generation of health professionals. Others train national staff in less formal environments. Building local capacity is central to the identity of the Christian Health Service Corps, therefore we actively seek out places where we can have a lasting impact by discipling, and training local Christian physicians and health professionals to serve in their own communities.

Assemblies of God Hospital, Saboba is one of these facilities. Although there is no formal training program Ghanaian physicians come often serve for extended periods providing an opportunity for cross-cultural growth and learning.

CHSC missionaries Dr. Jean  and Bob Young have been serving at this facility for many years, Jean is a pediatric surgeon, the only surgeon in this region. Bob serves in other ministry capacities and helps keep the hospital infrastructure functional.

CHSC support staff needs at this facility: 

  • Hospital/ Missionary Chaplain
  • Information Technology Specialist
  • General admin support such as social media

Language: English is spoken by most hospital staff, and it is the country’s official language and predominates government and business affairs. It is also the standard language used for educational instruction. Although, about 7 million Ghanaians speak the language Twi.

Housing: is available for short-term volunteers and long-term staff

Christian Health Service Corps is an interdenominational Christian mission that holds the Apostles' Creed as our Christian Statement of Faith. The key qualification for missionary service is being a true disciple of Jesus.

Reserve Corps Application

Our Reserve Corps program allows healthcare professionals seeking to volunteer short-term to do so in a way that supports long-term Christian medical missions work. CHSC places healthcare professionals in a growing list of Christian hospitals across Africa, Asia, Latin America and other regions. Christian Health Service Corps works to improve access to primary healthcare, surgical services, and community-based disease prevention services. Non-Christian volunteers are accepted on a case by case basis but solely at the discretion of the hospital and CHSC team the volunteer will be supporting.
