About Michael & Claire Wood

Michael and Claire met at college and got to know each other while ministering together in a nursing home. God has cultivated in them both a passion for serving people and sharing freely about the gospel of Jesus Christ through words and actions.

As the children of missionaries, they are both thrilled to have the opportunity to serve as missionaries themselves at Pioneer Christian Hospital alongside Claire’s parents: Joseph and Rebecca Harvey. Pioneer Christian Hospital serves the people of Impfondo and the Likouala Region and aims to offer healing to the whole person, integrating physical, social, and spiritual care.

Michael supports the hospital by working as an administrative assistant to the medical director: Doctor Harvey. His duties include aiding with communications, assembling and attending meetings, following up on action plans, and more. Additionally, serves the hospital by helping coordinate with medical missionary volunteer teams. He also hopes to use his gift and experience as an educator to help the people of the Likouala Region develop solutions to their own community health needs using a strategy called CHE (Community Health Evangelism).

Claire has fully embraced her new role as a mother and will be soaking up every minute with Baby Sylvia and their 2nd child who is due to arrive at the end of August 2022. Claire helps with overseeing housing accommodations for our team members and volunteers. She also helps by heading up various special projects to keep the buildings organized and clean. Eventually, she hopes to revitalize Mbote Boutique: a sort of thrift store run by the hospital. At the store and at home she will use her gift of hospitality to make everyone around feel welcomed and loved. In her spare time, she hopes to use her artistic gifts to add more beauty to the hospital environment.

Sylvia serves the hospital and missionary team by being adorable and bringing joy to everyone she meets.

Reserve Corps Application

Our Reserve Corps program allows healthcare professionals seeking to volunteer short-term to do so in a way that supports long-term Christian medical missions work. CHSC places healthcare professionals in a growing list of Christian hospitals across Africa, Asia, Latin America and other regions. Christian Health Service Corps works to improve access to primary healthcare, surgical services, and community-based disease prevention services. Non-Christian volunteers are accepted on a case by case basis but solely at the discretion of the hospital and CHSC team the volunteer will be supporting.

Faith Questions

Christian Health Service Corps staff are missionary medical professionals, but we do invite our non-Christian colleagues to join our effort to bring quality healthcare to the poor at the discretion of mission hospital and CHSC staff at the facility. Every volunteer is expected to follow the hospital dress code, where there is one, and code of conduct.
