Overlooking the shores of Lake Kivu, Kibogora Hospital is located in the southwestern corner of Rwanda, 100 miles from the capital city, Kigali. From its humble beginnings as a Free Methodist mission station with orphanage and dispensary in the early 1940s, it has grown into a referral medical facility with a wide range of medical services serving a population of 250,000
Rwanda’s MOH states that, at the present time, there is only one doctor for every 20,000 people, and 50 children per 1000 live births die before the age of five. Poverty, malaria, AIDS, along with other debilitating diseases continue have a devastating effect on many lives.
Kibogora Hospital has 275 beds providing surgical, general medical, pediatric, maternity, neonatal, and isolation services, in addition to running a very busy Emergency Room department, ophthalmology, physiotherapy, dental, family planning and HIV/Aids testing & treatment clinics, and x-ray and laboratory support services.
Currently, the Hospital is staffed by Rwandans and Congolese. Visiting specialists from overseas provide specialist care, staying from a month or longer depending on need and availability.
