Seasons Change

Seasons change here too! We’ve gone from dry season to rainy season. It is a magical transformation from a bone-dry land to a lush, green place where gardens flourish. We miss family and look forward to furlough next year, but Kalukembe is (especially for our children) our beautiful home. This is where their friends are and where adventures are had. Where they’ve celebrated having pets such as bush-babies, owls, roosters, cats, frogs and fish. Where they hunt for wild game and prepare it over the open fire. It is also the place where they are learning who God is, and how He is present and working. It is a place where we seem to worry a lot (as parents) and they (as children) see plenty of suffering and sickness: their “Tio” (uncle) Abel whose wife died Thursday from heart failure, the home of their dear
friend Luis that is a single room of crumbling adobe and has a leaky roof, Tio Miguel (the father of their best friends) with bilateral above the knee amputations from a land-mine explosion in the civil war, and their friend Julio almost dying in the hospital from tuberculosis and a disseminated parasitic infection. But is the place where they are witnessing and participating in His goodness to His people: in planning a visit to Tio Abel’s 10 children to share in their grief, in helping Luis learn to read (along side our son Ezekiel), in the new wheelchair they gave Uncle Miguel yesterday, and in visiting Julio who is now recovering. And we celebrate His goodness and love in Jesus, the Son of God, who has passed through the heavens, knows our suffering, and allows us to “approach the throne of grace to
receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:14-16). What an amazing gift! What Good News!

We are glad that God has brought us to this place where we can work together with a national evangelical church on a 120 year-old mission station, at a hospital where we can minister to physical and spiritual health of the people here. It is where He has brought us. It is where we (not just our children) are learning more of who God is and how He is present and working. He is Emmanuel. We hope you will also consider visiting us! It is a long trip, but totally worth it!
As far as safety goes, I will reply with what Mr. Beaver said to Susan.

“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
C.S. Lewis, Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe

We are thankful for: Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us! Lots of opportunities to talk to our children of this good news.
Please join us as we pray for: Preparing for furlough and clinical care when we leave.
